Geography

At Holme Valley, we aim to offer a high-quality geography curriculum which enables pupils to develop a sense of place, whilst exploring, investigating and understanding the man-made and natural processes that impact on our planet. We strive to inspire pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

Our high-quality geography curriculum has been carefully sequenced to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills and vocabulary, ensuring pupils’ prior knowledge is built upon. Facilitating learning through a selection of carefully-selected themes, we aim to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We will provide opportunities to investigate our substantial school grounds and local area, enabling pupils to develop an understanding of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area special and unique. We will teach a range of geographical enquiry skills such as collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and how to communicate information in a variety of ways. Our geography curriculum is enhanced through a variety of first-hand experiences including the use of fieldwork, educational excursions and residential visits.

We aim to develop confident, independent learners who can demonstrate contextual knowledge of location, a deep understanding of geographical processes and the competency to use a range of geographical skills.

If you require any further information about our geography curriculum, please contact the school office and our subject leader will get back to you.
